Hotel / Hospitality: Hilton Garden Inn, Philadelphia, PA

Constructed entirely over a fully operational parking garage, the Hilton Garden Inn takes advantage of its “found” location as the closest hotel to the Great Hall and PA Convention Center. A modest street level check-in lobby leads guests to the larger public spaces on the uppermost floor to take advantage of enhanced views. A tower-like element is used to articulate the main entrance and as an interpretation of the Hilton Garden Inns trademark pavilion element. The project required complex physical planning and extensive engineering analysis to accomplish the successful “overbuild” scenario.

Hilton Garden Inn structural system is steel framing with concrete floor slabs.  It is set on top of an existing parking garage that remained fully operational during construction.  The existing garage was reinforced to support the lateral loads imposed by the new four-story hotel.  The garage was also altered to allow for the construction of an at-grade lobby and new elevators to access the hotel.
